Saya quote aja satu paragraf email di situs blog seseorang bernama Peter Mytko:
Japanese people don’t sleep. They put in ridiculous working hours everyday and I’m amazed they’re not completely burned out. One time Kaori was over at my apartment and fell asleep while I was making dinner. When she woke up, she was puzzled and said, “I don’t know why I’m so tired. I had a long sleep last night.” I asked her how long she slept and her response was, “Four hours.” That actually is a long time for her. Usually she’ll have one or two nights a week where she won’t sleep at all. When she does sleep, it’s for about as long as I would take a midday nap. In the textbooks used for junior high the examples in the texts always have the most standard information (e.g. lunch is at 12:00, supper is at 6:00, etc.) In one exercise, keep in mind this is for kids aged 12-15, the question is, “How long do you usually sleep for?” The answer in the text was, “I usually sleep for five hours.” Students go home from school late because they go to club activities first. When they get home, they study until way past midnight. It never seems to end. People with jobs often stay at the office until about 10:00 pm before going home to finish up some work or out for a drink. Most people I know can handle that for a short while but that’s the way a lot of people here live everyday. When I go to elementary schools we practice “How are you?” The most popular answer is always “I’m sleepy.”
